MORROW COUNTY, Ohio -- A 7-year-old was shot in the leg overnight Monday when he and his brother apparently were playing with a shotgun.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS Monday.
Morrow County sheriff’s deputies and EMS units responded to a residence on Morrow County Road 30, north of the village of Mt. Gilead, regarding a shooting.
That was at about 2:22 a.m. Monday.
A 7-year-old male was on the floor in front of a couch and was bleeding heavily from a wound in the lower part of his right leg.
The boy’s grandmother was attempting to apply first aid. The deputies took over first aid until squad personnel arrived.
The boy was taken by squad to the Morrow County Hospital then flown by Med-Flight to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
It appeared the 7-year-old boy and his 9-year-old brother were playing around and found a single-shot 12-gauge shotgun in a hutch, buried under some old clothing.
The shotgun was broken down into three sections. The 9-year-old put the weapon together, not noticing that there was a live shell in the chamber.
As he finished putting the sections together and closed the gun, it went off, hitting the 7-year-old in the leg.
Deputies came to those conclusions after speaking with the family.
The boys’ mother was a work at the time of the incident. The grandparents were home but unaware of what the boys were doing.
The weapon belonged to the boys’ grandfather, but he said he had forgotten about the weapon and had not seen it for several years.
The sheriff's office was treating this as an accidental shooting currently.
The incident remained under investigation.
The current condition of the 7-year-old was not known, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
