SWACO Worried About Illegal Waste Dumping

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The economy continues to curb many things, including curbside service for yard waste pickup.

The City of Columbus ended its contract to have the service for residents at the end of January.

Now there is concern about no only where to take things, but what happens if people decide to illegally dump their yard waste, NBC 4's Marcus Thorpe reported.

The Roberts Road facility for the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio is already 200 tons over what it took in for the first two weeks of February 2008.

For those that don't want to haul, the concern is that they will dump the waste in other areas, said John Remy, of SWACO.

It's a concern shared by residents and businesses alike.

From the moment the City of Columbus said they would not pick up yard waste anymore, businesses like the Clintonville Community Market worried that all of the waste would end up in front of their business or in an alley.

SWACO officials also said they worry that residents would dump yard waste with their regular trash. This practice is also illegal and weighs down the delivery.

"If it increases the weight of the truck, it increases the bill for the city of Columbus and causes more problems," Remy said.

To report illegal dumping, visit www.NailADumper.com or call 614-871-5322.

In the meantime, residents and businesses are leaning on each other to keep a watch on the community.

"It's up to the neighbors now. It's a done deal, hopefully we can pull together and help each other out," said Judith Brooks, of the Clintonville Community Market.

The Roberts Road and Rohr Road locations are for free for Franklin County residents.

For limbs and branches only, you can try the city's compost facility at 7000 Jackson Pike.
