COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Over the last two weeks, NBC 4 has highlighted recession proof jobs -- ones that can stay strong even in a tough economy.
But what about jobs that are doing more business during the economic downturn?
Jobs that have been around for centuries are suddenly making a comeback, NBC 4's Tanya Hutchins reported.
Central Ohio tailors said repairs are on the rise for zippers and holes in coats -- and shoe repairs are also increasing.
Dr. Shoe Worthington's business is up 15 percent over the last year.
"If you can repair shoes for $20 to $25, just to do regular maintenance or buy shoes for $100, of course it's easier to spend $20," said Yakov Kamenetskiy.
Scott Anderson walked into Dr. Shoe for while you wait service on the pair he wore into the store.
"Yakov has taken care of shoes of mine that are 15 years old that still look brand new and because of Yakov, that's the reason they're that way," Anderson said.
Shoe repair isn't the only part of the business that is doing well. Word of mouth and Internet searches have led to Kamenetskiy repairing and refurbishing purses, Hutchins reported.
"(Purses have) also been huge right now because it's very expensive bags -- like regular maintenance and cleaning and restoration costs $36 to $59," he said.
Dr. Shoe has been getting repair orders from 41 states and when the economy bounces back, Kamenetskiy still expects to be busy, making the old new again.
