Residents Fight To Save Log Cabins

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Central Ohio log cabin village will be torn down if it isn't moved -- and nearby residents are upset that they may lose a part of history.

The village of four homes and a barn has been sold to Nestle -- with possible plans to expand. So the cabins must be moved by April 30, NBC 4's Tanya Hutchins reported.

It's called the Ole Village and it is made of four log cabins and a barn dating back to the 1800s.

"This cabin was actually my home for three to four years back in the early 80s. It was a fun place to live. I had never lived in a log cabin before," said Steve Stolte, former Union County engineer.

Stolte is working with the city of Marysville and Union County to save the log cabins and keep them together as a village.

But neither the city nor county can afford the $75,000 move.

Nestle is donating the structures and working with more than 30 people or organizations interested in acquiring the cabins.

"Nestle is an expert in the area of food and beverage, but we are not an expert in historic preservation, so therefore we need to find homes for them and we need to find them with people who will take care of them," said Joe Jimenez, of Nestle PTC.

That leaves more than two months to come up with a plan to move five pieces of Union County history, even if they have to be dismantled and moved log-by-log, just as they were brought to the site by the Ohnsman family in the 1970s.

"You don't see many cabins around anymore. They're a real part of our history and our heritage and it's just imperative that these be around for future generations to see," Stolte said.
