COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A family and their pets escaped a New Year's Day fire.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS Friday.
Firefighters said a smoke detector saved the family from the flames.
The fire started at a Rich Street home around 6 p.m. Thursday. That's on the city's East Side.
The damage was significant, but fire crews were able to extinguish the flames quickly.
Columbus fire Captain James Davis said the family was smart.
The Red Cross is helping the family, and the cause of the fire currently hasn't been found.
