New Ohio Legislature Begins Work Monday

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The new state legislature chosen by voters in the November election begins its work Monday amid a series of pressing challenges. The Republican-controlled Senate and the newly Democratic House will attempt to craft the next two-year budget in one of the most difficult economic environments in modern Ohio history. Gov. Ted Strickland is hoping for $5 billion in federal aid to help in plugging what is projected to be a $7 billion deficit. Lawmakers will also grapple with a new school funding plan expected to be introduced by the Democratic governor. The Ohio Supreme Court has repeatedly found Ohio's school-funding system to be unconstitutional because it relies too heavily on local property taxes.
