COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tom Jackson from the Ohio Grocers Association tells NBC 4’s Ana Jackson, “The problem is its big dollars when they go into a store they can steal thousands of dollars in one trip.” Authorities say this crime is bigger than shoplifting; suspects clear out the entire shelves of products.” Some of the big items gangs of thieves go after are razor blades, baby formula, smoking session products just to resell them.
Organized retail theft is expected to cot Ohio retailers three billion dollars a year while the state is missing out on $90 million of sales tax revenue. But new changes in Ohio’s Racketeering Statutes will now give prosecutors the tools to go after the ring leaders. Changes in the law will also help the consumers. According to officials, retailers have to raise prices to make up for their losses. So, fewer losses could mean fewer price hikes.
