SOLON, Ohio -- An Ohio distributor is recalling its peanut butter after finding it has been contaminated with salmonella bacteria. The bacteria was found in an open five-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter. Tests have not linked the contaminated product to the salmonella outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people in Ohio and 41 other states nationwide. Additional test results are expected next week.
The company has asked customers to stop distributing all peanut butter with a lot code that begins with the number eight. It has canceled orders with Peanut Corporation of America, which manufactures the product. Solon, Ohio-based King Nut Companies distributes the peanut butter under the King Nut and Parnell's Pride brands to food service providers that ship it to schools, hospitals and restaurants.
