DELAWARE, Ohio -- A former treasurer of a local church was sentenced Monday for stealing more than $80,000 in church funds.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
The former treasurer of the now-closed Stratford St. Paul United Methodist Church on U.S. Route 23 stole the funds between 2005 and 2007, said Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney Dave Yost.
Darrell Tate, 50, of Waldo was sentenced to 17 months in prison Monday after he pled in November 2008 to one count of theft, a fourth-degree felony, for stealing from the church.
"It takes a special kind of callousness to steal from a church," Yost said. "This near-max sentence is well-deserved."
Between Jan. 1, 2005 and March 31, 2007, Tate stole $82,443.27 in church funds by either writing checks to himself or using the church credit card to acquire funds, according to Yost.
