CENTRAL OHIO -- Are temporary jobs the best way to earn a paycheck and a foot in the door?
NBC 4's Candice Lee GOT ANSWERS on temporary employment availability.
Recent unemployment numbers painted a grim picture of the nation's economy.
- The unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent in December 2008. That was an increase from 6.8 in November 2008.
- Employers slashed 524,000 jobs from their payrolls in December 2008 alone.
- And in the last year, 2.6 million people lost their jobs.
Ohio hasn't received the state's latest unemployment figures, but with a number like 7.3 percent in November 2008, plenty are out of work.
Could temporary jobs be the best way to get a check and make your way into a company?
As more and more people find themselves without a job, Central Ohio temp agencies continued to boom – despite grim unemployment numbers.
While it might appear that companies layoff temporary employees first during an economic downturn, PROTEAM Staffing President Keith Stevens told NBC 4 that's not necessarily the case.
"What we are seeing more often now is that's a competitive strategy that they keep a certain amount of their workforce temporary," Stevens said.

Here are the Central Ohio industries that currently are looking for temporary workers: finance, accounting, information technology and distribution jobs.
It could be money in your pocket, but Stevens said with so many applicants in the pool, companies will be selective in whom they hire.
Companies continued to be concerned that over-qualified personnel will leave when the economy gets better.
Stevens suggested simplifying your resume to land a position.
"What I'm suggesting is don't make it as glowing, especially if you're looking at a position that you are over-qualified for. That will be a red flag for an employer."
