COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Gov. Ted Strickland is asking Congress and President-Elect Barack Obama to not forget the state's budget needs as they move toward passing an economic stimulus package.
"I'm asking for help for education so that we won't have to terminate teachers and underfund schools and allow college tuition to explode," Strickland said.
In a conference call with reporters this week, Strickland emphasized the need for significant financial help at the state level, not just in the form of shovel-ready public works projects, but in financing to provide continued health care, education and other services that protect the vulnerable.
"These efforts to help states are, in my judgment, absolutely critical and if they do not occur, I think the recession could be extended and made deeper," Strickland said.
Strickland also said Ohio has more than $1 billion in infrastructure projects that could begin with federal funding.
