COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Accidental damage to a local school and talk of asbestos has caused concern among parents of students at a local elementary school.
Over the weekend, a ventilator pipe broke at Moler Elementary School, causing significant water damage to old floor tiles in the school, NBC 4 reported.
The tiles contain asbestos, so a special contractor was hired to remove the tiles.
School has not been closed during the process because there is currently no threat to anyone inside the building.
Asbestos can only become airborne if the tiles were to be crushed, leaving dust behind, or if they were burned -- neither of which has happened.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Ohio Department of Health are monitoring air quality at the school.
Air quality tests done at Moler Elementary came back as “undetectable.” There was literally no trace of asbestos, according to Columbus City Schools spokesperson Jeff Warner.
