COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The City of Columbus is targeting areas of the city that need to be more pedestrian and traffic friendly. Linden, Franklinton and Wyland Park are all the midst of mobility plans.
But work is about to begin in another neighborhood and residents said it's about time, NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported.
The Hilltop area during rush hour translates into a tough time for those trying to navigate the historic neighborhood.
Pat Newman has lived in the Hilltop since 1945.
"Many years ago, we had so many people coming to church, we had a traffic cop out here to stop traffic. Many years ago," Newman said.
"I take it that's not the case anymore?" Hunt asked.
"No. No. It's not," Newman said.
But while times have changed, church leaders at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church said traffic has just gotten worse.
"I don't know of any parent on the north side of Broad (Street) who allows their children to walk to school, because there are no sidewalks," said Leigh Holder-Bobo.
That's where the mobility plan could bring change. The City of Columbus wants neighbors to tell officials what their top traffic and accessibility complaints are.
Residents will get a chance to do just that during two meetings next week.
The city is starting to implement the Linden area's mobility plans at a cost of $20 million over the next 20 years. The money to fund the projects will come from bonds.
The meetings for the plan in the Hilltop are on Jan. 28 at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian and Jan. 29 at Crossroads United Methodist Church. Both begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m.
