COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Though Wednesday's snowy conditions were problematic for many, Columbus police utilized the snow to their advantage, tracking and apprehending an alleged bank robber.
Chase Bank, located at 5681 Cleveland Ave., was robbed around 10 a.m. Wednesday after a man wearing sunglasses and a hooded sweatshirt allegedly gave the teller a note saying he had a gun and wanted cash.
The robber fled the bank on foot with money and a dye-pack that the teller had given him.
Responding police followed the suspect's snowy footprints from the bank to nearby Inntown Suites, where they located a room the suspect entered.
Police found 41-year-old Jay B. Thompson trying to wash red dye from himself, his clothing and the money and arrested him without incident, according Harry Trombitas with the FBI.
Witnesses to the robbery subsequently identified Thompson as the robber, and he was charged with robbery, Trombitas said.
Wednesday's robbery was the Columbus area's eighth bank robbery in 2009.
