COLUMBUS, Ohio -- City budget constraints are ending weekly yard-waste collection.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS Friday.
The city of Columbus’s yard-waste collection contract with Rumpke was set to expire this weekend, and the contract won't be renewed due to budgetary concern.
The city has contracted with Rumpke Inc. for weekly curbside collection of yard waste since 1994.
"Rumpke has done an excellent job, and we appreciate its service,” Public Service Director Mark Kelsey said. “But due to our financial situation, we must look at less-expensive options.”
The city continued to explore options for limited residential yard-waste collection in the spring and fall. That's when collection is most needed.
Details will be announced as they become available.
In the meantime, residents can take their yard waste to the following locations free of charge:
- Com-Til, the city’s compost facility at 7000 Jackson Pike, accepts tree limbs.
- Kurtz Bros. accepts leaves, grass clippings, small branches and holiday trees at its three facilities:
- 2850 Rohr Rd., Groveport
- 6055-C Westerville Rd., Westerville
- 6279 Houchard Rd., Dublin
- SWACO has two contracted compost facilities where Franklin County residents can bring their yard waste free of charge.
- 2850 Rohr Rd., Groveport
- 4120 Roberts Rd., Columbus
SWACO also operates the “Nail-a-Dumper program where people can report illegal dumping in Franklin County. The 24-hour reporting hotline is 614-871-5322.
Yard waste is solid waste and designated solid waste consisting solely of vegetative matter resulting from landscape maintenance: grass, brush, leaves and nonconstruction natural wood debris.
Fruit and vegetables are not considered yard waste and should be put in with your regular trash. Dirt, rocks and sod should be taken to a site seeking fill dirt.
