CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Truck drivers in Ohio are urging state lawmakers to raise the highway speed limit for big rigs to match the 65 mph limit mandated for other drivers. Tractor-trailers are limited to 55 mph on interstate highways, except for the Ohio Turnpike. Ohio Trucking Association President Larry Davis says the trade group believes a uniform speed limit would decrease accidents and improve safety for all drivers. He says many crashes occur when car drivers rear-end slower trucks.
Ohio is one of 11 states that have different speed limits for cars and trucks. The State Highway Patrol strongly opposed lawmakers' previous efforts to raise the limit, saying that faster-moving trucks can't stop as quickly and are more likely to cause accidents.
