DETROIT, Michigan -- Federal prosecutors are recommending a 20-year prison sentence for an Ohio woman who caused an explosion and fire at Michigan State University to protest genetic-crop research. In a court document filed Friday night, Assistant U.S. Attorney Hagen Frank said Marie Mason is an "unapologetic advocate of violence and intimidation."
A defense lawyer said Saturday that Mason feels remorse for the New Year's Eve 1999 incident, committed in the name of the radical Earth Liberation Front. The 47-year-old Cincinnati woman will be sentenced Thursday in federal court in Lansing, Mich. Mason pleaded guilty to conspiracy and arson in September in a case that was aided by her ex-husband's cooperation with the FBI. Frank Ambrose, Mason's former husband, is serving nine years in prison.
