CINCINNATI
Gov. Ted Strickland has decided to empty Ohio's "rainy-day" fund because of the state's projected multi-billion dollar deficit over the next two years.
Spokeswoman Amanda Wurst says the governor will outline his plan to use the entire $1 billion reserve fund, along with $3.4 billion in federal stimulus money, when he presents his budget on Monday.
Officials have projected a $7.3 billion deficit in the state's two-year budget.
Strickland has repeatedly ruled out a tax increase, and has said the rainy-day fund should be preserved until the need becomes overwhelming. He first hinted in December that the time to resort to dipping into the fund could be near.
Wurst said Friday that the rainy-day fund will help Strickland propose a balanced state budget.
