COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Has the economy gotten so bad that someone is willing to steal something that is almost worthless? Apparently so in Columbus.
On Beck Street in German Village, there are standalone poles with clean cuts where someone stole parking meters this week. The same thing happened on East Broad Street.
It's a lot of work for what could be not much money. Even full, a parking meter can only hold between $30 and $60.
The meters are worth $500, which makes the theft of one a felony.
The city said it will fully prosecute anyone found stealing city property.
A sewer grate from the utilities department was also stolen this week from Jackson Pike.
Getting away with the theft is one thing, but trying to make money off the theft is another.
At the Joyce Iron and Metal Company, workers won't take anything that an individual wouldn't normally own like sewer grates, manhole covers or shopping carts.
The city said the stolen meters will be replaced.
