INDIAN LAKE, Ohio -- A suspect is in custody after a flood of tips were received in connection with an accident that left one pedestrian dead and another injured.
Jeffrey Gates, 48, of Port Jefferson, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred on state Route 366 south of Indian Lake.
Injured in the same incident was 24-year-old Virgil Gates, also of Port Jefferson. Jeffrey was Virgil's father.
Virgil sustained critical injuries when a dark-colored older vehicle struck the two men as they attempted to cross the highway.
The vehicle fled the scene south on state Route 235, according to witnesses who were nearby at 1:30 a.m.
Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the broadcast of the description of the suspect vehicle brought in many tips, including one that led to a suspect about 12 hours after the fatal incident. Charges may be filed Monday, officials said.
The name of the suspect is not being released, pending completion of the investigation.
