A day's work can turn in to tragedy. Firefighter Pat Malone was hurt last year when a contractor hit a gas line.
When something goes wrong during a job, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is called in to investigate but only if someone dies, is hospitalized, or the damage is 50,000 or more. That's federal law.
NBC 4 uncovered in November that gas companies are the only ones fined up to $100,000 a day until the problem is fixed.
NBC 4 also found that under the One Call Law, contractors are supposed to call before they dig. If they don't, there's no fine.
After a gas leak Tuesday on Harrisburg Pike, ,b>NBC 4 wanted to know if anything's changed. Ohio Sen. Steve Buehrer is hoping to change the law.
If passed, an Underground Protection Advisory Committee will be formed and that committee will decide the penalties for those that violate the law.
There will be updates made to marking systems and a new response system would be put in place. The bill was recently introduced in the Senate.
