LAKING, W.Va.
The Lakin Correctional Center for Women has opened a new section where inmates can live with infants born in custody.
The Keeping Infant Development Successful, or KIDS, program started July 1. Officials at the mininum-security prison say the goal is to reduce recidivism by helping inmates make a successful transition when they complete their sentences.
Inmates will care for their children while living in the section and will receive educational and transitional programs. Prison officials say the program will help inmates establish a bond with
their infants.
Lakin is asking companies and individuals for donations of any items that will help it supply the new section with baby care products.
