CLEVELAND-- The library system serving Cleveland and the surrounding county is raising the fines for overdue books, cutting staff and eliminating Sunday hours at many branches.
Executive Director Sari Feldman explains that the Cuyahoga County Public Library is in a budget bind resulting from a 31 percent reduction in state funding for all Ohio public libraries.
The Cleveland area libraries plan to raise the daily late-book fine from a nickel to 10 cents and double the maximum fine to $10 per item.
Feldman also said Monday that the system will cut as many as 50 of its employees.
As of Sept. 13, three-quarters of the 28 branches will be closed on Sunday, which happens to be the libraries' busiest day of the week based on the number of visitors per hour.
