COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No Child Left Behind Act gives parents the right to inquire about their child's classroom teacher's qualifications.
What information are parents privy to?
Parents have the right to know what degrees a teacher holds, the college major and whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived.
Parents can find out if teachers are qualified to teach certain subjects or grades.
Information is also available about teachers' aides and their qualifications.
The Canal Winchester Local School District, for example, says parents can call the Assistant Superintendent, Barb Harrison, at 614.837.4533.
The Ohio Department of Education says parents can request certain teachers at the beginning of the school year, but during the school year is more problematic due to student teacher ratios and continuity.
South-Western City Schools parent Tanya Thivener is on the PTA Board in her area and says she didn't know the information was available. She would also like to see personal bios on teachers, written by the teachers, along with employment histories that list past schools and how those schools were rated at the time the teachers taught there. Thivener's son went to Harrisburg Elementary School last year. That school will not be open this coming school year due to budget cuts, but Thivener is glad to know her son's teachers will move to his new school in the Fall.
