GROVE CITY, Ohio -- The Hilliard City School District has received dozens of calls from parents of students in the South-Western City School District, asking about transferring their students this Fall, due to SWCS' lack of high school sports. South-Western City had to cut sports due to budget constraints.
Although Issue 2 on the August 4 ballot will allow voters to decide whether to bring back sports through a four-year, 8.3-mill operating levy, some families want to move out of the SWCS district.
Hilliard's District Compliance Officers verifies all new enrollments. Staff makes home visits to registered addresses and even rumored addresses if the district gets tips from bus drivers or neighborhood parents that certain students don't actually live in the Hilliard district.
Visits are conducted year-round, often at night, when parents are expected to be home.
Hilliard City Schools has been making home visits for about four years.
15-year-old Donni Wilks went to Pleasant View Middle School last year in the South-Western City School District. She wants to move so she can run Track and play Basketball this Fall, but she doesn't yet know where. Wilks and her mother have been discussing Columbus City Schools.
One woman told NBC 4 she plans to move her son to Obetz so he can play sports. She says two colleges are considering her son for athletic scholarships.
