COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In less than two weeks, Columbus residents will vote on an income tax increase.
The City of Columbus is facing a $115 million budget shortfall. Officials want to raise the income tax from 2 percent to 2.5 percent, which means residents would pay $50 more for every $10,000 in income.
The tax could generate between $95 million and $100 million for the struggling city.
As the campaign enters the final weeks, NBC 4 has learned who is fueling support for Issue 1.
The big donors to Issue 1 are a virtual who's who of the Columbus elite.
For an issue that would end the jobs of close to 300 firefighters and 300 police officers, union support was overwhelming.
Ohio Council 8 of the AFL-CIO contributed $60,000 to citizens for strong neighborhoods and good jobs -- the campaign supporting Issue 1.
Big business is also behind Issue 1. Columbus Southern Power contributed $50,000 to the effort.
Global consulting firm Stantech contributed $40,000, Nationwide Insurance contributed $35,000 and Huntington Bank contributed $20,000.
