CCS' Year-Round School Program Grows

Parents consider year-round school the way of the future

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Year-round school began Monday in one Central Ohio district.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Columbus City Schools' Weinland Park Elementary, Woodcrest Elementary and Africentric Early College offer year-round classes.

More than 1,600 students attend for nine weeks and then take off three weeks.

Sometimes, there are "intercessions" with limited attendance, so teachers can focus on certain grades and give one-on-one attention.

Weinland Principal Monica Gant says the year-round schedule gives students a jump start on the year and keeps students motivated.

"They go for nine weeks and they're off for three weeks and then they come back for nine weeks and they're refreshed and they're ready to go again," Gant said.

"I think the year round program is a good program because the kids are not off as long in the summer time, so they don't really have so much time to forget what they've learned," said Victoria Brown, a parent.

The breaks are spread out through the year, giving parents more freedom as well.

"I think the way they have it set up is really good because you're able to, you know, work in vacations all throughout the year," Brown said.

Brown said her son is better off because he's learning even during the summer months. She said she thinks the idea will spread to all Columbus City Schools.

"It's really well worth looking into because children lose so much during the summer, so it's really a good opportunity to keep kids going, keep them moving forward," Gant said.

District-wide orientation for 6th- and 9th-grade students is Aug. 19 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The orientation provides students with a chance to get to know their new schools, new bus route and meet teachers and staff.

Classes for year-round school will end June 16, 2010. The last day for traditional students will be June 3.
