CENTRAL OHIO -- ODOT crews put up signs along U.S. Route 23 Tuesday, marking the start of construction on nine bridges in Pickaway County.
The signs say, "Putting America to Work ... Project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."
Complete General Construction of Columbus was the lowest bidder.
Vice President of Operations Jim George said he had to lay off more employees than ever before last year and this project allows him to rehire almost everyone.
The $9.8 million project will span more than five miles from U.S. Route 22 to state Route 361.
The US 22 bridge will be torn down and rebuilt.
The project is scheduled to finish in the fall of 2010.
"This project was actually funded in 2012 and we moved it up. We had the plans well enough along that we could move it up and actually take advantage of some funding that we could move it up and actually take advantage of some funding that was offered," said Lisa Zigmund, of the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Twenty-seven thousand vehicles travel U.S. 23 in Pickaway County every day.
