SPENCER, W.Va.
Roane General Hospital administrators say the hospital will no longer deliver babies.
CEO Douglas Bentz says recent declines in total births in Roane County and increasing demands on hospital resources led to the decision to close the obstetrics department.
The final birth at Roane General occurred Saturday.
A partnership between the hospital's physicians and midwives from Family Health Care have assisted in deliveries at Roane General for 25 years.
Dr. Carroll Christiansen says he plans to keep his obstetrics unit open at Family Health Care to offer prenatal and gynecological care. But he says his patients will have to travel to hospitals in other counties for delivery.
