GROVE CITY, Ohio -- The Ohio Senate approved its version of the $54 billion budget bill on Wednesday.
The next step is to send it to a conference committee that will work out a compromise with the house.
South-Western City Schools isn't happy with the Senate's take on school funding.
The district said the Senate's version of the budget doesn't solve the school funding issue and, in a way, is going backwards.
"A quarter-percent increase in the funding will still mean a decrease for us in total dollars at the end of the year when you look at the reductions that come out of the current funding system," said Superintendent Bill Wise, of South-Western City Schools.
Wise said the house version cut from the governor's version and the Senate's version cut from the house, so students would end up with even less funding than they began with compared to last year.
This year, South-Western City Schools received a little more than $80 million in state funds.
Wise also said the funding formula doesn't address inflation, adding that he's frustrated that the battle has lasted so long.
"The economy can do one of two things. It can be an excuse to not move forward or it can be a rally cry in order for the state to say it's time to move forward," Wise said.
