CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Economically hard-hit Ohio could get a boost in the electric-car business with government-backed lithium-ion battery materials production.
Backers said Thursday that the proposed deal includes a 50 percent federal investment to build a plant in Elyria in northeast Ohio.
The BASF chemical company, which landed licensing rights from a federal laboratory, says the project will make Ohio a global player in the lithium-ion battery industry.
Such longer-lasting batteries could jump-start the Obama administration's goal of promoting plug-in electric cars.
BASF selected Elyria because of its 100-year history of producing in the city and its proximity to BASF research facilities in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood.
