HAMILTON, Ohio -- An Ohio sheriff who abruptly closed a jail and transferred more than 200 inmates says the move could save hundreds of thousands of dollars by year's end.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said Friday that inmates were transferred to the county's other jails on Thursday night when he closed the minimum security jail in Hamilton.
The move also eliminates GED and life skills programs, and programs to help inmates with alcohol and drug addiction.
The sheriff says county commissioners will now have more leeway in negotiating new boarding rates with the jail management company and he can reduce staff by possibly three or four deputies.
Jones says he didn't announce the move ahead of time for security reasons.
