Bowling Green To Mull Furloughs For Employees

»  Comments | Post a Comment

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Officials at Bowling Green State University will consider a plan to make up to 500 employees take unpaid furloughs to help the school balance its budget. President Carol Cartwright says an e-mail to faculty that the plan will be presented to the school's board of trustees June 26. University spokesman Dave Kielmeyer said the mandatory, unpaid furlough would apply to full-time, year-round employees, most likely those who are paid $50,000 a year or more.

The school has seen its enrollment decline for two years, and officials expect it to decline by at least 3 percent for next fall. Bowling Green implemented a hiring freeze last fall, anticipating at $6 million to $10 million deficit. It also eliminated about 70 administrative positions through attrition, retirements, and layoffs.
