CENTRAL OHIO -- The intersection at Karl and Morse roads on the city’s North Side is one of Central Ohio’s most unsafe and flawed intersections.
The intersection saw 201 crashes between 2005 and 2007, according to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission or MORPC.
NBC 4’s Matt Alvarez DUG DEEPER to find out what makes this intersection so dangerous.
Drivers who travel through the intersection at Karl and Morse know it gets a bit dicey.
“Especially when the fire engines are pulling out of here,” one driver said. “I mean no one pays attention to where they're going.”
Seemingly, motorists don’t know what to do when a fire engine drives out of its station and into the intersection: Some pass by, some yield and others stop.
It’s a situation Columbus Fire Lieutenant Ryan Brzezinski knows well.
“Everyone is trying to be in a hurry and try to beat the trucks and get through.” he said.
The intersection was ranked as having the third most crashes in Central Ohio. Morse Road and Cleveland Avenue ranked No. 1.
“I think a big part of it has to do with the location of the fire station. There's a median there, and people just don't know which way to go,” resident Matt Ashmore said.
“There have been a few accidents that have happened. Cars are trying to yield. Someone is in a hurry, and they'll rear-end them,” Brzezinski said.
Is there a solution, though?
Relocation of the fire department was an option at one time, but with the current budget crisis and construction in the area motorists and firefighters will have to be patient.
