COLUMBUS, Ohio -- What started as a traffic stop, turned into an historic bust for CPD Monday.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Columbus police seized 15 pounds of heroin with an estimated street value of $4 million.
Patrol officers noticed a male driving erratically on Interstate 70 eastbound Monday evening.
Officers initiated a traffic stop, but the driver sped off, CPD said.
CPD was able to follow the suspect in its police chopper.
The suspect exited I-70 and drove through some East Side neighborhoods.
The driver threw a black bag out of the passenger-side window while fleeing police, CPD said.
The suspect bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers apprehended him in the 1200 block of South James Road.
CPD said officers found 15 pounds of heroin in the black bag that was thrown out of the vehicle.
CPD Narcotics Sgt. Bill Mingus estimated the street value of the heroin to be $4 million and probably the largest heroin seizure the police department has ever made.
Officers also seized $1,200 in cash.
The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of heroin. Authorities have not released the suspect's identity currently.
Police said he may see additional charges.
He was being held in the Franklin County jail awaiting his court appearance.
