COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a difficult economy, saving money is paramount. And there are lots of tried-and-true ways to do it. NBC 4’s Marshall McPeek says one old-fashioned idea is making a comeback with some very modern variations.
Lynn uses a shopping list almost every time she comes to the store. She says it helps keep her organized and keeps her from forgetting anything.
It may also help save some significant cash because it keeps her from impulse buying.
The list also saves gas because Lynn doesn't have to make a second trip to pick up stuff she forgot the first time.
There are some decidedly modern ways to make and take your list.
At GiantEagle.com, you can create a list directly from the weekly flier. Click on the sale items to add them directly to your list. Add the other things you need, print it out and take it to the store.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has a pre-built shopping list of "healthy" items in .pdf form. Just print it out and put check marks by the things you want to pick up.
GroceryWiz.com helps you create and print lists for free, and at AllRecipes.com, you can not only store your own recipes, you can create pantry lists for things you buy on a regular basis and add all the items from a recipe so you don't forget anything
There are even mobile applications for your smart phone that you can take into the store. Some are pretty simple, while some are a little more complex. Most of them will remember items from past lists and help you add them automatically.
