COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mothers who find themselves unfit to care for a child have different options to consider. One option is adoption.
Attorney Tommy Taneff explains parents who choose adoption pay no expenses. But he adds legal abandonment is another option some parents turn to.
Under Ohio’s Safe Haven Law, a birth parent can give up a child within thirty days as long as they leave the child with a person at a hospital, a fire department, or a law enforcement agency.
Parents do not need to leave any identification, but Taneff says a social and medical history is helpful.
If needed, the child will receive medical care and then is eventually adopted.
There are no legal ramifications to parents unless abuse is suspected.
If a birth mother wants her child back, Taneff says she has to undergo DNA testing and has to work with Children Services to prove she’s rehabilitated.
However, if the child is already adopted, Taneff says it is almost impossible for the birth parent to undo the adoption.
