Man & Insurance Co. Bicker Over Accident Claim

Clarence Anderson says a hitched trailer smashed through his apartment window Sunday, injuring him and six others.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A West Side resident has been fighting to protect his belongings after an accident damaged his home and injured him and his family.

The accident happened Sunday at Clarence Anderson’s West Mound Street apartment.

A trailer that was hitched to a SUV rolled into the apartment.

The damages included a broken window and holes in the wall and ceiling, and part of the bathroom ceiling fell on Anderson.

His apartment window has been boarded up, and the unit has been deemed unsafe.

The apartment managers said Anderson has to move, but he doesn't want to leave his belongings unsecured.

The Anderson family wants to know why it's taking GuideOne Insurance so long to process the claim.

GuideOne is the insurance company for the driver whose trailer rolled into the apartment. The SUV’s driver’s name is Jack Chambers.

A GuideOne agent told Anderson that an adjuster has to visit the property and take pictures of the damage.

“Ever since this happened, I have been waiting to move. The office down here at the complex has given us new units and everything, and we are all just waiting for the insurance company to come out here and do their job,” Anderson said.

Anderson said Chambers was very cooperative when the accident happened.

The family’s frustrations continued to grow, though.

Anderson has a bandage around his ankle, and other family members are wearing slings or bandages. A family member had to have staples put into the top of his head.

One family member said she is fearful every time she hears a truck go by because it brings back memories of the crash.

Anderson's children are staying with relatives.

Anderson said he has been waiting for Guide One to assess the damage since Sunday, but he said they haven't visited at all.

Guide One said it is trying to rectify the situation.

The company issued this statement to NBC 4: "Since receiving word of this claim, GuideOne has been in contact with Mr. Anderson multiple times. We have attempted to inspect his property, but Mr. Anderson has declined. Because Mr. Anderson has advised us that he has hired legal counsel, we are waiting to be contacted by his attorney to proceed further. We look forward to resolving this situation soon."
