Rare Bear Sighting In Ohio

»  Comments | Post a Comment

LEBANON, Ohio -- A black bear has been spotted in southwest Ohio, a part of the state where bears are seldom seen.

Wildlife officials say the male bear that was reported Tuesday in Warren County northeast of Cincinnati probably was roaming for a new home and a mate, but likely will be out of luck on both counts.

Officials believe the same bear was seen a little bit farther east in recent weeks, in Adams, Brown and Clinton Counties. They speculate that it swam across the Ohio River from Kentucky, or could have walked across a bridge.

Most bear sightings in Ohio occur between May through August, the peak months of black bear breeding and when young male bears start to roam.

State law prohibits hunting or harming the bear because it is an endangered species in Ohio.
