CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two groups are locked in a dueling campaign to bring an aquarium to Cleveland. The nonprofit Cleveland Aquarium Inc. plans a fundraising campaign for a $50 million downtown facility that would be built with private and corporate donations. Christopher Bonar, the group's president, said he tried to form a partnership with the Jacobs Investment Group, but the two sides disagreed on location and size.
Bonar says the aquarium proposed by the Jacobs Group is too small to succeed. The Jacobs Group announced plans Wednesday to build an aquarium in Cleveland's once-thriving Flats riverfront entertainment district. About half the $9 million cost has been lined up and the developer is looking for local and state government financial help.
