LEWISBURG, W.Va. -- A worker at a West Virginia turkey plant who stomped on a bird's head and slammed another to the ground will spend a year on home confinement for animal cruelty.
Edward Gwinn of Crawley will be jailed if he violates the terms set Monday by Greenbrier County Circuit Judge James Rowe. Gwinn was also fined $1,000 and ordered to have no contact with domestic animals.
Gwinn and Scott White of Second Creek were indicted on felony charges in February, but each pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors.
White was sentenced June 8 to a year in jail but can petition for home confinement.
Virginia-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which videotaped at Aviagen Turkeys last fall, says it's the first time U.S. turkey-farm workers have been convicted of animal cruelty.
