COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When there's an emergency, what's in place to make sure emergency crews can communicate?
You may be surprised to find out what's going on behind the scenes, NBC 4's Lauren Diedrich reported.
It's been called the mesh that holds Central Ohio's hospitals together when it comes to communication.
The Central Ohio Trauma System is in place to keep residents safe during a disaster.
"If a patient walks in with some biohazard, hospitals could write biohazard and everyone sees this," said Nancy Bechtel, of COTS.
The Franklin County Commissioners approved $60,000 in funding to help the agency monitor what's happening in the region's 27 hospitals.
"People need to know when the county spends money like this. We're spending it for a critical need," said Franklin County Commissioner Paula Brooks.
EMS responders carry a wireless version of the system in their cars to keep them in the loop while they're at emergency scenes.
