COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Dispatch will lay off 45 newsroom employees beginning April 3.
Publisher and chief executive John Wolfe says on the newspaper's Web site Monday that the Dispatch can no longer avoid the cuts as advertising revenue declines.
Editor Ben Marrison says the cuts will speed up restructuring to increase emphasis on local reporting and the Web site.
The Dispatch declined to say how many newsroom employees it employs. It had 236 editorial employees in 2007, when the paper offered voluntary buyouts to up to 25 newsroom staff to reduce costs because of advertising cutbacks.
Newspapers nationally have cut jobs amid falling revenue. Four newspaper companies sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in recent months.
The Dispatch, published by the Dispatch Printing Co., has daily circulation of about 230,000 and Sunday circulation of about 344,000.
