COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Over the last two weeks, nearly 20 cars have been stolen from the campus area of The Ohio State University.
Many of the vehicles are old and have had the tires removed before the bodies are dumped at various sites, NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported.
According to the Columbus Division of Police Auto Theft Squad, officials are unsure of what the motive could be for the thefts, given that the cars are dumped quickly.
"They're taking it right off the street. It could be parked in front of your house," said Sgt. Todd Anderson, of Columbus police.
Officials said the thefts aren't taking place during a certain time of the day, but they are targeting older models.
"Newer cars with all the gadgets on them are harder to steal, but still, why they're doing that, I don't know," Anderson said. "We don't know if it's somebody playing games. We don't know if it's an initiation type thing. We really don't know what's involved."
Police said they believe that anyone who notices suspicious activity near campus could help them solve the crime.
Anyone with information is asked to call 614-645-4993.
