NEWARK, Ohio -- It took firefighters hours to contain a massive warehouse fire in Newark late Wednesday.
The fire began early Wednesday evening at a large warehouse on South Pine Street in Newark.
Due to the size of the blaze, all firefighters in Newark, including those off duty, were brought in to fight it, reported NBC 4’s Mike Bowersock.
“We had heavy fire showing from the rear of the building. We had the roof collapse within the first couple of minutes,” Newark Fire Captain Doug Vermaaten told NBC 4.
Fire officials said the shape and size of the warehouse posed some challenges in fighting the fire. The structure was composed of three separate building units, all connected by inner walkways.
Officials said an individual had recently purchased the warehouse and planned to use the space to repair furniture for needy families.
Division of State Fire Marshal investigators, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Newark fire department, continued their investigation of Wednesday night’s commercial structure fire.
The origin and cause remained undetermined.
Investigators did a preliminary investigation Wednesday night and returned to the scene Thursday morning to continue their efforts.
Investigators continued to conduct a thorough scene examination and interviews with first responders, witnesses and the building’s owners.
