CAMPBELL, Ohio -- Some U.S. veterans are unhappy with a decision to take down American flags surrounding a Roman Catholic cemetery in Ohio.
Rev. John Jerek says the board of St. John the Baptist Cemetery in suburban Youngstown felt the roughly 150 flags around its perimeter gave the appearance of a national or military cemetery, rather than a Catholic one.
The flags began going up in 2005, started by a World War II Navy veteran. Jerek says they will be replaced with one large flag surrounded by a small garden, and there will be a plaque honoring those who had donated the other flags.
But veterans and other critics are circulating petitions to urge the cemetery in Campbell to reverse its decision. Former Campbell Mayor Dominic Medina says "the whole city" is upset.
