COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sunday’s tragedy in an Illinois church is sparking some debate right here in Columbus about the safety of your family while attending church.
Prosecutors in Illinois say 27-year old Terry J. Sedlacek marked the day as “Death Day” in a planner.
Police are also saying he brought enough ammunition to kill 30 people.
Whether you attend a church, synagogue or a mosque to worship, the thought of a murder being carried out inside one of these buildings is not usually a one that goes through your mind.
After the second major church shooting in less than two years, security experts say it is time for all places of worship to have a security plan in place.
NBC 4’s Matt Alvarez spoke to different places of worship Monday evening and some say they can’t afford to buy security cameras or hire security guards.
Most rely on their church leaders to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior or diffuse any illegal activity from taking place.
Other churches and synagogues tell Alvarez, they work closely with The Columbus Police Department having security enhancements on their properties.
If you have any questions or concerns about the safety of your family while attending church, it is best to talk with your pastor about the churches security plan. Local police departments are always willing to come in and speak with the elders in your church to work out an action plan if something were to happen.
