CENTRAL OHIO -- Tax deadlines are about one month out, and there still are some credits and deductions you can claim on your 2008 tax forms.
NBC 4's Matt Alvarez has the FAST FACTS on why the deductions are well worth it.
Taxpayers were lined up outside the Internal Revenue Service in Columbus Thursday, hoping to get answers and file their returns.
TAX TIPS
Make sure you have detailed and proper documents to help the filing process go smoothly.
Stephanie Brenneman with Liberty Tax Service offered the top five credits and deductions to help you save money.
1. You may be eligible for a Recovery Rebate Credit. If you didn't receive the full payment from last year's stimulus check, you can go to IRS.gov to claim the remaining amount.
2. There's a First-Time Homebuyer Credit for those of you who purchased a home for the first time. If you purchased a home last year, you're eligible for $7,500 dollars in tax credit, and if you've purchased a home this year, you're eligible for $8,000.
3. If you're a student with children or unemployed with children and trying to find work, there's a Dependent Care Credit. Get a return on the money you spend on child care while trying to find work or while in school.
4. Teachers can cash in on a Supplies Credit of as much as $250 for items purchased for the classroom.
5. Don't forget to file any charitable contributions -- even donations of clothing. These can be filed on your tax forms.
