COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A father of five was fatally shot late Thursday while protecting the business he loved.
Northeast Side residents were mourning the loss of a neighborhood businessman.
NBC 4's Tanya Hutchins GOT TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER Friday.
Daud Osman, 38, was fatally shot inside the Iftin Resaurant on Cleveland Avenue, just south of Morse Road.
Columbus police said the homicide started with a robbery.
CPD officers arrived on the scene of a shooting at 10:10 a.m. Thursday and found Daud inside the restaurant with several gunshot wounds.
Daud's death had friends and customers wondering why.
Three men entered the Iftin Restaurant and robbed the business and two customers before shooting Daud in the upper body, CPD said.
Daud died shortly before midnight at OSU Main Medical Center.
Friends said he was well-known throughout the community.
"I heard he was a part owner. He just purchased a share of this restaurant not too long ago, and it's kind of sad to see that somebody would just come and shoot him like that," restaurant customer and friend Osman Osman said.
Osman Osman said Daud used to deliver vegetables to other restaurants in the Somali community.
Now, Osman Osman said, area businesses need to take action.
"I'm also a business owner, and I'm kind of scared now. So, we have to get together and find ways we can protect ourselves. We know -- the economy is getting worse and that might be the motive for this robbery," Osman Osman said.
The Iftin Restaurant remained closed Friday.
There was no breakfast and no Internet cafe while the community mourns.
Daud was being buried Friday evening.
Columbus police continued to look for the three men involved in the shooting.
Anyone with information on Daud's homicide was encouraged to call CPD at 614-645-4730.
