COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A judge has awarded about $62,000 in damages to a former Ohio prisoner who was injured while being taken to a hospital by guards.
Judge Joseph Clark of the Ohio Court of Claims ruled Friday in Columbus to award $62,125 to Sheri Stewart, injured during a 2002-2006 prison term for forgery.
Stewart claims in a 2005 lawsuit that she was severely injured on June 13, 2003, when she fell off a plastic step stool while getting out of a prison van.
The lawsuit says Stewart was handcuffed and her feet shackled and the stool was not adequate to support a confined inmate.
The lawsuit also says no guards helped Stewart get out of the van.
Stewart was being taken from a prison in Marysville northwest of Columbus to Ohio State University Medical Center for unspecified treatment.
